Our MOBY Legacy experience as a family of six - MOBY Lines with kids

MOBY Lines with Kids: Our Honest Family Ferry Review

Last Updated on August 23, 2026 by Ina Geißler

Taking the ferry has become one of our favorite ways to start a family vacation. Instead of squeezing everything into airline baggage limits, we drive our own car onboard, explore the ship with the kids and, on an overnight crossing, go to bed knowing we’ll wake up much closer to our destination.

We’ve traveled with MOBY five times so far, on routes to both Corsica and Sardinia. Our crossings included MOBY Corsica, MOBY Orli and the much newer sister ships MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy. We’ve tried both daytime and overnight ferries, traveled with and without a cabin and experienced MOBY with our four children at different ages.

And there is one thing our kids agree on: taking the ferry isn’t just transportation. It’s part of the trip. In this MOBY ferry review, you’ll find out what traveling with MOBY Lines with kids is really like, whether a cabin is worth it, how day and night crossings compare, what families can expect onboard and what you should know before driving onto the ferry with children.

Why trust MutterGeisslein?
We’ve taken five MOBY ferry crossings as a family since 2023, traveling between Genoa and Bastia as well as Livorno and Olbia with four children ranging from about five years old to their teens. We’ve experienced four different MOBY ships, daytime and overnight crossings, family cabins and traveling without a cabin. As a family travel writer and mom of four, I share what actually worked for us in my family travel guides and what I’d want to know before taking a ferry with kids for the first time.

MOBY Lines with kids at a glance

MOBY currently operates 10 ships under the MOBY brand, ranging from large fast cruise ferries such as MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy to smaller ferries used on shorter routes. The company mainly connects mainland Italy with Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and Elba.

MOBY officially lists dedicated children’s play areas and video games as part of its family offering, while the exact facilities vary by ship. The larger cruise ferries generally offer much more than the smaller vessels, so I would always check the specific ship assigned to your route before promising the kids a pool, play area or particular restaurant.

MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy are the standout ships in the current fleet. They are sister ships operating on the Livorno–Olbia route and are among the largest ferries in the world, with around 441 cabins each and a much more modern onboard experience than some of MOBY’s older vessels.

Is MOBY Lines good for families with kids?

For us, yes. MOBY is actually one of the ferry companies we would actively choose again when traveling with children. Part of that is practical. MOBY ships offer children’s play areas, arcades and several places to eat, while families booking a cabin can request bed rails and travel cots subject to availability. MOBY also currently states that its children’s play areas are free to use and accessible 24 hours a day.

But there is also the fun factor. Many MOBY ships are instantly recognizable by their colorful Looney Tunes designs, and that alone makes boarding more exciting for younger kids. Once onboard, there are decks to explore, ships and ports to watch, play areas to discover and the open sea outside.

A daytime crossing can still feel long with children, so I wouldn’t board without entertainment of our own. An overnight MOBY ferry is a completely different experience. With a cabin, we can have dinner, settle down for the night and sleep through most of the journey.

For our family, that’s where ferry travel really comes into its own. Instead of paying for another hotel night somewhere along the route, we’re already moving toward Corsica or Sardinia while we sleep.

MOBY Lines with kids: day ferry or night ferry?

We’ve experienced both with MOBY, and for our family the difference is quite noticeable. A daytime ferry can be fun, especially when the weather is good and you can spend time outside, but on a longer crossing the hours can eventually start to drag.

An overnight ferry feels much more relaxed to us. You board in the evening, settle into your cabin and wake up much closer to your destination. It also replaces one hotel night along the way, which can make the overall journey feel more efficient even though the cabin itself obviously costs extra.

For a daytime crossing, we’d bring:

  • snacks
  • card games
  • books
  • tablets
  • coloring supplies
  • small toys
  • headphones

There are indoor play areas, arcades, restaurants and outdoor decks on many MOBY ships, but I still wouldn’t rely entirely on onboard entertainment for several hours with kids.

Why we prefer the MOBY overnight ferry

With a cabin, the night crossings we’ve taken with MOBY have been surprisingly restful. Our crossings were calm enough that we slept well, and on the larger ships in particular we barely noticed the movement of the sea.

For us, that makes the ferry part of the vacation rather than a travel day we simply have to get through. The kids still get the excitement of boarding a huge ship, but most of the actual crossing happens while everyone is asleep.

MOBY ferry cabins with kids

We’ve always booked four-berth cabins for our overnight crossings, even though we were traveling as a family of six. When the children were younger, some of them still slept with us, so the four beds were enough for our family at the time.

MOBY Lines cabin with kids - 4-bed-cabin
MOBY Corse 4-bed-cabin

The cabin layout varied depending on the ship. On MOBY Corse, two of the beds were noticeably wider, which made sharing with a younger child easier. On MOBY Orli, MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy, the beds were narrower and more like standard single berths.

Our cabins included:

  • four beds
  • private shower
  • private toilet
  • towels
  • bed linen
  • power outlets

Cabin amenities can vary by ship. On MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy, our bathrooms included a hairdryer, while our cabin on MOBY Corsica did not.

-> Here, you’ll find all our travel tips for families

Is a cabin worth it on MOBY Lines?

For us, traveling MOBY Lines with kids overnight without a cabin wouldn’t be our first choice. You can book reclining seats or find somewhere in the public areas to settle down, and we’ve seen plenty of passengers create surprisingly elaborate sleeping setups with blankets, sleeping mats and even air mattresses.

With children, however, we would book a cabin again every time. Having our own bathroom, proper beds and a door we can close makes the crossing considerably more relaxing. The kids can go to sleep while the ship continues toward our destination, and we arrive the next morning having actually rested.

A cabin is an additional expense, so whether it’s worth it depends on your budget and the length of the crossing. For our family, it’s one of the things we wouldn’t try to save money on during an overnight ferry journey. We personally wouldn’t book one on a daytime crossing.

Ask for a bed rail immediately

If you’re traveling with a younger child, you can ask the cabin steward for a bed rail. Our advice is to do this as soon as you’re shown to your cabin.

The stewards who help passengers find their cabins often move on to other duties later, and finding the right person again can become much harder. Asking immediately saves you from searching the ship when everyone is already tired and ready for bed.

You cannot return to your car during the crossing

Once the vehicle decks are closed, passengers cannot go back to the car to collect something they forgot. That means your overnight bag needs to contain everything you’ll need until arrival:

  • pajamas
  • toothbrushes
  • medication
  • chargers
  • baby supplies
  • comfort toys
  • fresh clothes
  • water
  • snacks

We keep that bag separate from the rest of the luggage before arriving at the port so we can grab it quickly when it’s time to leave the car.

Boarding a MOBY ferry with kids and a car

Boarding is probably the part of ferry travel that feels most chaotic, especially the first time you do it. Once you know what to expect, though, it becomes much easier.

MOBY tells passengers how early they need to arrive in their booking documents, and I would take that seriously rather than cutting it close. Depending on the port and route, you may spend quite a while waiting in the vehicle lanes before boarding actually starts.

Have your travel documents ready as well. You’re crossing an international border when traveling between Italy and Corsica, and car checks can take place at the port. On our return from Olbia, for example, we were asked to get out while our car was inspected before boarding.

If you’re still deciding whether to travel by ferry or fly instead, you can also browse our family airline reviews and flying with kids tips. We share our first-hand experiences with different airlines, including seating, baggage, onboard service and what traveling with kids was actually like.

Driving onto the ferry

You drive your own car onto the vehicle deck and follow the crew’s instructions. When the ferry is busy, this can feel hectic. The goal is to load a huge number of vehicles quickly and use the available space as efficiently as possible, so cars may be parked very close together.

Before driving onboard, we make sure we have these things within reach:

  • overnight bag
  • documents
  • medication
  • valuables
  • chargers
  • kids’ essentials
  • snacks and drinks

Once parked, don’t start reorganizing the entire trunk. Take what you need quickly, lock the car and follow the signs into the passenger areas.

If you’ve booked a cabin, head to the reception area. From there, you’ll receive your cabin key and directions to the correct deck. We found the onboard signage straightforward on our MOBY crossings.

What is driving on a ferry like? MOBY Lines experience

Getting off the ferry with kids

Disembarkation can feel more stressful than boarding for me. Passengers return to the vehicle decks, people are getting into cars, engines start and some vehicles begin moving while others are still loading children and luggage.

There’s crew directing traffic, but with kids I would still be particularly careful and keep everyone right beside me until they’re safely inside the car. Once your lane starts moving, the actual process is usually straightforward. You follow the vehicles ahead of you and drive off the ship.

Do you have to reverse off a MOBY ferry?

One question we see surprisingly often is whether you have to reverse your car off the ferry. On the larger MOBY ferries we’ve traveled on, this was usually not the case.

The vehicle decks are generally arranged so that most cars can drive through the garage in a kind of U-shaped flow: you drive onto the ferry forwards, park where the crew directs you and later drive forwards again when it’s time to disembark.

There can be exceptions. Some of the last vehicles loaded may be directed into spaces where they reverse into position, allowing them to leave quickly once the ferry reaches port. And on smaller ferries or depending on the garage layout, vehicles may all be parked in one direction, which can mean either driving straight out through another ramp or occasionally reversing to leave.

The important thing is not to worry about working this out yourself. MOBY’s crew assigns every vehicle its place in the garage and directs drivers during both boarding and disembarkation.

What is there to do onboard MOBY with kids?

What you’ll find depends on the ship, and that’s important because MOBY’s fleet includes vessels of very different sizes and ages. The newer MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy naturally feel more modern than the older ships we’ve traveled on.

Typical MOBY onboard options include:

  • indoor playgrounds
  • arcade games
  • outdoor decks
  • restaurants
  • cafés and bars
  • shops
  • sea views
  • lounge areas

Our kids have always found ferry travel exciting in itself. Walking around the ship, watching the port disappear, looking for other ships and exploring the different decks already fills part of the journey.

Don’t promise the kids a swimming pool

Some MOBY ships have pools, and seeing a pool listed among a ship’s facilities can sound fantastic when you’re traveling with children.

However, I wouldn’t make it part of your plans. Across our five MOBY crossings, we have never actually experienced a pool that was filled and available for swimming. That doesn’t mean the pools are never open, but availability can clearly vary. For us, a pool is therefore a potential bonus rather than something we’d count on when choosing a crossing.

Food and drinks onboard MOBY Lines with kids

You don’t need to bring all your food with you. MOBY ships have different restaurant, café and bar options depending on the vessel, although prices onboard are naturally higher than what you might pay away from the ferry.

We still like bringing some of our own:

  • water
  • fruit
  • sandwiches
  • crackers
  • kids’ snacks
  • breakfast basics

Bringing your own food and non-alcoholic drinks has never been a problem for us, and with four children it also means we don’t have to buy something every time somebody suddenly decides they’re hungry.

Can you bring snack on a MOBY ferry? And are there restaurants on the ferries?

Our MOBY Lines review

After five crossings, our overall MOBY Lines review is very positive. We’ve traveled:

  • on four different MOBY ships,
  • used the ferry for both Corsica and Sardinia and
  • experienced everything from a long daytime crossing without a cabin to overnight trips on the company’s newest and largest ships.

The biggest advantage for us is how well ferry travel fits the way we travel as a family. We can bring our own car, don’t have to worry about airline baggage limits and arrive with everything we need for the vacation already with us.

What we particularly liked:

  • family-friendly ships
  • clean cabins
  • kids’ play areas
  • easy car transport
  • colorful ship designs
  • good English onboard
  • comfortable night crossings
  • competitive fares

There are still things I’d change. Daytime crossings can feel long, food onboard isn’t particularly cheap, and the vehicle decks can be stressful when traveling with several children. The pools shown as amenities on some ships have also never been available during any of our crossings. None of those things would stop us from booking MOBY again.

The MOBY ships we’ve personally traveled on

As I’ve mentioned, we have not just taken one MOBY ferry. We have traveled on several different ships, which gave us a much better feel for what a MOBY Lines review should actually include. Some ships felt more classic and compact, while others were impressively modern and spacious. If you’re planning a family ferry trip, it definitely helps to know that not every MOBY ship feels exactly the same.

MOBY Lines with kids: MOBY Corse

Our first MOBY experience was on the MOBY Corse on the route between Genoa and Bastia. Compared with the newer ships in the fleet, MOBY Corse felt more classic and a little more compact, but still absolutely manageable for a family trip with kids, particularly because of its Looney Toons design and the pay area.

On the way to Bastia, we went on a daytime crossing, on the way back we traveled overnight and had a four-bed cabin, which worked well for us. What stood out on this ship was that two of the beds were a little wider than the others, which made cabin sharing with children easier than expected. The ship itself did not feel particularly luxurious, but it had exactly what we needed for a comfortable crossing to Corsica.

What we liked most about MOBY Corse was the fact that it gave us that real ferry feeling right from the start of the trip. It may not be the newest ship in the fleet, but for us it was a solid and family-friendly way to get to Corsica.

  • route: Genoa to Bastia
  • best for: classic overnight crossings
  • atmosphere: traditional MOBY ferry feel
  • family highlight: practical cabin layout for families

If Corsica is your final destination, our complete Corsica with kids guide covers the beaches, family-friendly places to stay, river pools, driving times and the parts of the island we enjoyed most with our children.

MOBY Lines with kids: MOBY Orli

We also traveled on the MOBY Orli on the Corsica route, and this ship felt a little tighter and simpler than some of the others we have used. It still worked well for our family, but the cabin experience was slightly less comfortable than on MOBY Corse. This ship has a colorful maritime design.

On MOBY Orli, the beds in our four-berth cabin were narrower and more uniform, so the whole setup felt a bit more compact. That does not mean it was a bad experience at all. It just felt more basic, and if you are traveling with younger children who still like to cuddle into a parent’s bed, you may notice the difference more quickly.

Overall, MOBY Orli was perfectly fine for an overnight ferry with kids. It was not our most spacious MOBY Lines with kids experience, but it still delivered what matters most on a family crossing: a private cabin, a place to sleep, and a practical way to bring your own car to Corsica.

  • route: Genoa to Bastia
  • best for: practical overnight travel
  • atmosphere: simple and functional
  • family highlight: easy overnight crossing to Corsica

MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy

MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy are the ships that impressed us the most. These two sister ships are much newer, much larger and noticeably more modern than the smaller MOBY ferries we had used before. We traveled on them between Livorno and Olbia, and the overall experience felt like a clear step up.

If you are looking for the most modern part of the MOBY fleet, these are the ships to look out for. The public areas feel more spacious, the whole ship feels fresher and more polished, and the cabins were also better equipped. On MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy, our cabin had a private bathroom as usual, but also a hairdryer, which we did not have on every MOBY ship.

MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy were a completely different scale from the older MOBY ferries we’d traveled on before. The sister ships are significantly larger and more modern, and we traveled overnight on both between Livorno and Olbia.

The funny thing is that once you’re actually onboard, the difference isn’t as dramatic as you might imagine. It’s a little like flying on an Airbus A380: knowing you’re traveling on an enormous aircraft is exciting, but once you’re sitting in Economy, the basic experience is still recognizable as a flight.

Even though the crossing itself is still a ferry trip and not a cruise, these two ships make the experience feel more comfortable and a little more special. They are also famously among the largest passenger ferries in the world, which of course adds a certain wow factor, especially if your kids are fascinated by big ships.

For us, MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy represent the premium end of our MOBY Lines with kids experience. If we had the choice, these are definitely the ships we would be happiest to book again.

  • route: Livorno to Olbia
  • best for: overnight crossings to Sardinia
  • atmosphere: modern, spacious, impressive
  • family highlight: newer cabins and a very comfortable onboard experience

Visiting the bridge of MOBY Legacy

We had one experience on MOBY Legacy that isn’t part of a normal MOBY ferry ticket: we were invited to visit the bridge.

Standing up there and seeing how such an enormous passenger ferry is operated was incredible, especially after driving our own car into the ship only a short time earlier.

Regular passengers shouldn’t expect a bridge visit as part of their crossing as it’s forbidden due to safety reasons. We were able to do this because we were invited and before the crossing started, but it was easily one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had on any ferry.

Which MOBY ship did we like best?

If we compare all the MOBY ferries we have used so far, MOBY Fantasy and MOBY Legacy were clearly the most impressive. They felt the most modern, the most spacious and the most comfortable for an overnight family crossing.

That said, we also have good memories of MOBY Corse and MOBY Orli, especially because they were part of our Corsica trips and gave us exactly what we needed at the time. In the end, the best ship for your family will depend on your route, your budget and whether you value a more basic crossing or a more modern onboard experience. If you book MOBY Lines with kids and come across one of these four ferries, you can expect a smooth experience.

MOBY Lines prices: is the ferry good value for families?

For our trips, MOBY has repeatedly been one of the more attractive options in terms of price. That doesn’t automatically mean it will be the cheapest company for every route or travel date, so I would still compare crossings before booking.

The total price depends heavily on your setup:

  • travel dates
  • ferry route
  • vehicle size
  • cabin category
  • age and number of passengers
  • daytime or overnight crossing

Vehicle size becomes particularly important with campervans, motorhomes and caravans. A standard family car is obviously much easier and cheaper to accommodate than a large vehicle or combination.

For an overnight crossing, I also wouldn’t compare the ferry ticket with transportation costs alone. A cabin costs extra, but the crossing simultaneously replaces a night of accommodation while moving you toward your destination.

Why we prefer booking directly with MOBY

We prefer booking our ferry directly with the shipping company rather than through a third-party portal.

One reason is flexibility. Depending on the booking platform, you may find that certain accommodation options such as seats or cabins are automatically tied to the number of passengers. Booking directly has given us more flexibility when deciding how many cabin berths we actually need.

It’s also worth watching MOBY Lines offers. We’ve seen special promotions around occasions such as Valentine’s Day or International Women’s Day, so following MOBY on social media or subscribing to the newsletter can be worthwhile if you know you’re planning a Corsica or Sardinia ferry trip.

When is the best time to book a ferry with MOBY Lines?

If you’re traveling during the European summer holidays, we’d book as early as possible, especially if you need a cabin or are traveling with a larger vehicle. Popular overnight crossings and family cabins can become limited as departure dates approach.

At the same time, it’s worth watching MOBY’s promotions before booking. We’ve seen special offers throughout the year, so following the company on social media or subscribing to the newsletter can sometimes help you catch a better fare. For us, the best strategy is to start comparing prices early rather than waiting for a last-minute deal.

Corsica Ferries vs MOBY Lines with kids

MOBY Lines or Corsica Ferries - which ferry is better?
Corsica ferry at the port in Bastia

We’ve traveled with both MOBY Lines and Corsica Ferries, although our experience isn’t evenly distributed: we’ve taken five crossings with MOBY and only one with Corsica Ferries. So I wouldn’t turn this into a general ranking of the two ferry companies.

Based on our own trips, however, we would currently choose MOBY if route, departure time and price were comparable.

The biggest difference for us has been reliability. All five of our MOBY crossings operated as booked. With Corsica Ferries, our originally booked daytime crossing from Bastia was canceled at relatively short notice and we had to switch to an overnight departure instead.

That kind of change can be particularly inconvenient for families because it affects more than the ferry itself. Suddenly you may need a cabin you hadn’t planned to book, your arrival time changes and the rest of your journey may need to be reorganized.

We also personally found the MOBY ships cleaner overall, particularly in the public areas. But with only one Corsica Ferries crossing, that’s an observation from our trips rather than something I’d use to judge the entire company.

Our experience so far:

  • more MOBY experience
  • reliable MOBY departures
  • cleaner MOBY ships
  • one Corsica Ferries cancellation
  • both workable with kids

I would still compare both companies when booking Corsica. The best ferry for your family depends heavily on the route, port, travel date, departure time and price rather than the company name alone.

MOBY Lines with kids: ferry ports

We’ve traveled with MOBY from Genoa, Livorno, Bastia and Olbia, and the experience before boarding can vary considerably depending on the port. If this is your first MOBY ferry with kids, I would always allow more time than you think you’ll need. Waiting at the port is much less stressful than trying to find the correct entrance with a departure deadline approaching.

Genoa ferry port

Genoa ferry port: How to get there
View of Genoa from the ferry

Genoa is by far the port we found most stressful to reach by car. Driving through Genoa itself can already be confusing, and navigation systems don’t always make finding the correct ferry entrance any easier.

Our biggest tip is simple: once you’re approaching the port, follow the official ferry signs rather than relying on your navigation system. We’ve ended up driving in circles there before. Once inside the actual port area, however, we found everything much easier to navigate.

Bastia ferry port

Bastia was the opposite experience for us. The ferry port is relatively straightforward to reach and navigate, and we’ve found the whole process much less stressful than in Genoa.

We’ve used Bastia several times for our Corsica trips, and arriving around two hours before departure has worked well for us. Always check the current check-in time stated on your own MOBY booking, though, rather than using our experience as a fixed rule. If you’re planning the rest of your trip around the ferry, you can find much more about where we stayed and what we explored in our complete Corsica with Kids guide.

Livorno and Olbia ferry ports

We used Livorno and Olbia for our overnight crossings aboard MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy when traveling to Sardinia. The general procedure was familiar by then: arrive at the port, find the correct vehicle lane, wait for boarding and follow the crew’s instructions once loading begins.

At Olbia, our car was inspected before we were allowed to continue toward the ferry, and we had to get out during the check. That’s something worth keeping in mind when traveling with kids: even when you’ve arrived on time, additional controls can add another step before boarding.

Our MOBY crossings between Livorno and Olbia were part of our family trip to Sardinia. If you’re considering the island yourself, you can also read our complete Sardinia with kids guide.

Would we book MOBY Lines with kids again?

Yes, we’d book MOBY Lines with children over and over again. After five crossings, MOBY is still one of the ferry companies we would happily use again for a family trip to Corsica or Sardinia.

For us, the biggest advantage is the combination of convenience and experience. We can bring our own car, travel overnight, sleep in a private cabin and arrive at the destination without having lost an entire day to driving or airport logistics. At the same time, the ferry itself still feels exciting to the kids rather than simply being transportation.

Our favorite parts of traveling MOBY Lines with kids are:

  • overnight cabins
  • own car onboard
  • kids’ play areas
  • colorful ships
  • flexible luggage
  • easy island road trips
  • reliable crossings
  • ferry adventure

I would still compare routes and prices before every trip, and I wouldn’t choose MOBY purely because we’ve had good experiences in the past. The specific ship, departure time and port can make a big difference.

But if MOBY offers a route that fits our plans, we would absolutely consider booking it again. After several trips, our MOBY Lines review is still clearly positive, and our children continue to see the ferry as one of the most exciting ways to start a vacation.

Frequently asked questions about MOBY Lines with kids

Is MOBY Lines good for families with kids?

Yes. After five MOBY crossings with our four children, we’ve found the ferries very family-friendly. Larger ships offer indoor play areas, restaurants, arcades and cabins, while taking your own car makes traveling around Corsica or Sardinia much easier once you arrive.

Is a MOBY ferry cabin worth it with kids?

For an overnight crossing, we think so. A private cabin gives children proper beds and your family its own bathroom and somewhere quiet to retreat. We would personally always book a cabin again when taking a MOBY night ferry with kids.

Can children sleep safely in MOBY ferry cabins?

You can ask the cabin steward for a bed rail for younger children. We recommend requesting one immediately after reaching your cabin rather than trying to find the steward later.

Do MOBY ferry cabins have a private bathroom?

Yes. The four-berth MOBY cabins we’ve used all had a private bathroom with a toilet and shower, plus towels and bed linen. The bathrooms are compact but practical, especially on an overnight crossing with kids.

Do MOBY ferry cabins have hairdryers?

It depends on the ship. Our cabins on MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy had hairdryers, while our cabin on MOBY Corse did not. Cabin equipment can therefore vary between vessels.

Can a family of six book a four-bed cabin on MOBY?

We traveled as a family of six and booked four-berth cabins when some of our younger children were still sharing our beds. When booking, check the current rules for your particular crossing and cabin rather than assuming the same arrangement will work for every family.

Can you sleep on a MOBY ferry without booking a cabin?

Yes, depending on the crossing and ticket options. Passengers travel in reclining seats or public areas, and we’ve seen people create sleeping areas with mats and blankets. With children, however, we find a private cabin considerably more comfortable.

Can you go back to your car during a MOBY ferry crossing?

No. Once the vehicle deck has been closed, you cannot return to your car during the crossing. Take medication, documents, chargers, children’s essentials and anything you need overnight with you before leaving the vehicle deck.

Can you bring your own food onto a MOBY ferry?

We’ve always taken our own snacks and drinks onboard without a problem. This can be particularly useful with children even if you’re also planning to eat at one of the onboard restaurants or cafés.

Is there a kids’ play area on MOBY ferries?

Many of the larger MOBY ferries have dedicated indoor children’s areas, although facilities vary between ships. We would always check the specific vessel scheduled for your route.

Do MOBY ferries have swimming pools?

Some MOBY ships have pool facilities, but we wouldn’t choose a crossing based on them. Across our five MOBY trips, we have never actually encountered a pool that was filled and available to use.

What is a MOBY daytime ferry like with kids?

A daytime crossing can be fun because children can explore the ship, visit the play area and spend time outside watching the sea. On a long crossing, however, the hours can drag, so we always bring our own entertainment as well.

Is a MOBY night ferry better than a day ferry with children?

We prefer the night ferry. With a cabin, most of the journey happens while everyone sleeps, and you arrive the following morning ready to continue your trip. A daytime ferry gives you more time to enjoy the ship but requires considerably more entertainment for the kids.

Can you take your own car on a MOBY ferry?

Yes. We’ve taken our own car on all our family ferry trips, which is one of the main reasons we enjoy this way of traveling. You drive the vehicle onto the ferry yourself and are directed into a parking space by the crew.

Is driving onto a MOBY ferry difficult?

It can feel stressful because the vehicle decks are tight and the crew needs to load cars efficiently. Follow their instructions, drive slowly and have everything you need onboard ready before entering the ferry.

How early should you arrive for a MOBY ferry?

The required check-in time depends on the route, port and whether you’re traveling with a vehicle. Always use the arrival time given in your current booking documents rather than relying on a general rule.

Is Genoa ferry port difficult to reach by car?

We found Genoa considerably more confusing than the other ferry ports we’ve used. Our tip is to follow the official ferry and port signs once you’re close rather than relying entirely on your navigation system.

Is MOBY Lines or Corsica Ferries better with kids?

Based purely on our own trips, we’d currently choose MOBY if the route and price were comparable. We’ve had five successful MOBY crossings, while our one Corsica Ferries booking involved a last-minute change from a daytime to an overnight crossing. That’s far too small a sample to make a general claim about both companies, though.

Is MOBY Legacy good for families?

We found MOBY Legacy very comfortable for our overnight journey to Sardinia. It’s significantly newer and larger than some of the older MOBY ships we’ve traveled on, with modern cabins and extensive passenger areas.

Are MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy the same?

MOBY Legacy and MOBY Fantasy are sister ships with very similar designs. We’ve traveled overnight on both between Livorno and Olbia and found the onboard experience comparable.

Is the Livorno to Olbia MOBY ferry good with kids?

For us, yes. Taking an overnight ferry between Livorno and Olbia allowed us to bring our own car to Sardinia and sleep through most of the crossing instead of turning the journey into another long travel day.

Can kids get seasick on a MOBY ferry?

They can, just as on any ship. Our five MOBY crossings were calm and we slept well, but we still carry appropriate travel-sickness medication with us in case conditions change.

Is MOBY Lines reliable?

All five MOBY crossings we’ve personally taken operated as planned. Ferry schedules can always be affected by weather, operational issues and other circumstances, though, so no ferry company can guarantee that schedules will never change.

Is MOBY Lines expensive for families?

That depends heavily on the season, route, vehicle and cabin. We’ve generally found MOBY competitively priced for our trips, particularly when considering that an overnight ferry with a cabin also replaces a night’s accommodation and lets us bring our own car.

Should I book MOBY Lines directly or through a booking website?

We prefer booking directly with MOBY. It gives us more control over our booking, and MOBY periodically runs promotions that can make direct booking particularly attractive.
