Some cities feel stressful with kids. Others feel like you’re constantly apologizing for having them with you. Copenhagen is different.
From the moment you arrive, you notice it: Families are part of everyday life here. Children are not an exception, not a disturbance, not something to manage quietly in the background. They are simply welcome. And that alone makes Copenhagen with kids an incredibly relaxing destination for a family city trip. We visited Copenhagen with our children and went home with one clear feeling: This is what a city trip with kids should be like!

Copenhagen isn’t just child-friendly on paper. It’s practical, thoughtful, calm and built for real life. You’ll notice it in small things:
- wide sidewalks and easy public transport
- short distances between attractions
- playgrounds scattered throughout the city
- public buildings with picnic areas and often even small kitchen corners
- a general attitude that children belong everywhere
You never feel like you’re in the way. And that makes a huge difference when traveling with kids.
Getting to Copenhagen with kids
Copenhagen is easy to reach, which already removes a lot of travel stress.
The city has a large international airport (CPH) with direct connections from many European and international destinations. At the same time, Copenhagen is well connected by train, especially from Germany and Sweden, making it a flexible option for different travel styles.
It’s also a great base if you want to combine your trip with nearby destinations – for example a short stop in Malmö, Sweden. You don’t have to plan this in detail to enjoy Copenhagen, but it’s nice to know that the option exists.

Is the Copenhagen Card worth it for families?
Copenhagen Card is a city pass. It’s available in two different option – Copenhagen Card Discover and Copenhagen Card Hop. Choose the Discover Card for free public transport or the Hop Card for free rides on hop-on-hop-off busses. Of course, free access to tons of attractions come with both types.
If you plan to visit several paid attractions and use public transport regularly, a city pass like the Copenhagen Card can make sense. Especially with kids, it can be helpful not to think about single tickets all the time.
That said, it’s not automatically the right choice for every family. We always recommend checking:
- which attractions are included during your travel dates
- how many you realistically want to visit
- whether your kids enjoy full sightseeing days or need more downtime
Copenhagen works both ways: structured sightseeing and slow, relaxed exploration.
Family-friendly accommodation in Copenhagen

Choosing the right accommodation makes a huge difference when traveling to Copenhagen with kids. Many families prefer to stay slightly outside of the center where rooms are less expensive.
In my humble opinion it’s better to find a hotel in the center, as you’re just closer to all the attractions. That makes it easier to make little breaks throughout the day or to make your way back at night.

Hostels are a great option. We stayed at Urban House Copenhagen by Meininger right next to Copenhagen main station and can really recommend it.

Tivoli Gardens (seasonal highlight)

Tivoli Gardens is one of Copenhagen’s most famous attractions – and for good reason. The amusement park is located right in the city center and combines rides, gardens, food stalls and atmosphere in a way that works surprisingly well for families.
During our visit, Tivoli was unfortunately closed because we were there in winter. But if you’re traveling when Tivoli is open, it’s absolutely worth considering, especially with school-aged children.
Children’s Museum Copenhagen Experimentarium

If there is one indoor attraction in Copenhagen that works across ages, it’s Experimentarium.
This is not a museum where kids are expected to stand still and read signs. It’s loud, interactive, playful and educational at the same time. Children can touch, try, build, experiment and move. That makes it perfect for:
- rainy or cold days
- kids who need action
- families who want learning without pressure
Plan enough time here. Many families stay much longer than expected. You can actually make it a whole day trip!
Guinness World Records Museum Copenhagen & More

The Guinness World Records Museum is an easy and enjoyable stop with kids. It doesn’t require hours of concentration and works well as:
- a shorter activity between bigger plans
- a backup for bad weather
- a place that feels exciting without being overwhelming
It’s especially nice if you’re traveling with kids who enjoy interactive exhibits and surprising facts.
Nearby, you’ll also find Mystic Exploratorie. It’s small and not particularly impressive on its own. If it’s included in a pass or you’re already there and curious, fine. But it’s not something I would plan extra time or money for.
Another museum that can be a lot of fun is Ripley’s Believe it or not! And make sure to visit Hans Christian Andersen Experience – an immersive fairytale exhibition.
The Tube Copenhagen

The Tube Copenhagen is a modern, immersive attraction that focuses on movement, visual illusions and playful interaction.
For kids, this often works better than classic museums. There’s no pressure to understand or learn. It’s more about exploring, moving, laughing and taking fun photos. It’s a great option if your family enjoys experiences that feel different from traditional sightseeing.
Free indoor playground Plegdamsremisen

This is one of those places parents truly appreciate.
Plegdamsremisen is a public, free indoor playground that offers much more than a single playroom. Children can climb, play, explore different spaces and simply burn energy.
We were genuinely impressed by how well-designed and generous this place is. Because it’s free, it’s also perfect for a shorter visit. Even one or two hours can completely change the mood of the day if the weather is bad or kids need a break from sightseeing. Because you don’t pay for tickets there’s not pressure to get the most out of your money.
Copenhagen Zoo
The Copenhagen Zoo is often recommended for families and can be a nice addition to your Copenhagen itinerary. We didn’t visit it ourselves because the weather during our stay was cold and windy, and we decided to prioritize indoor activities.
If you enjoy zoos and have good weather, it can be a pleasant option, but Copenhagen offers plenty even without it.

Getting around Copenhagen with kids

One of the biggest reasons Copenhagen feels so relaxed with children is mobility.
Public transport is easy to understand, reliable, stroller-friendly, modern and extremely safe. Distances are manageable, and you never feel trapped if kids suddenly get tired. Being able to quickly hop on a metro or bus instead of pushing through exhaustion makes city travel with kids much more enjoyable.
