The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte is one of Regensburg’s most modern museums. It is bright, warm, and full of interactive exhibits. Many families are surprised by how much kids enjoy it. Touchscreens, multimedia stations, models, and colorful displays make history feel alive.
Your children can explore Bavarian culture, traditions, famous people, and events — all in a way that feels engaging rather than overwhelming. The museum is also spacious, which means kids can move around without feeling trapped. Oh, and by the way: Kids visit for free!
Why it’s great in winter:
Warm, big, stroller-friendly, and perfect for slow days. You can easily spend 1–2 hours here without stress.
🧊 2. Ice Skating at the Donau-Arena
Best for: ages 5+ | active, winter-themed, great for families
Ice skating is one of the best indoor winter activities in Regensburg, and the Donau-Arena is the place to go. It is the home arena of the Regensburg EVR hockey team and offers public skating times on many days. In the evenings, they also host a disco run, which is awesome for teenagers.
Kids love the space. The music is fun, the atmosphere is relaxed. For beginners, there are skating aids available. Teenagers especially enjoy the sense of freedom, and younger kids love the “real winter feeling” that you cannot get from a simple indoor playground.
Why it’s great in winter:
It’s active, exciting, and perfect when kids are full of energy but the weather outside is too cold to be enjoyable. Definitely one of our favorite indoor activities in Regensburg!
🏊♂️ 3. Westbad Regensburg – Indoor Swimming
Best for: all ages | warm, relaxing, energy-burning
On cold winter days, few things feel as good as warm indoor swimming. The Westbad is Regensburg’s main indoor pool and ideal for families. It has:
- warm pools
- shallow areas for toddlers
- small slides
- water jets
- a family-friendly atmosphere
Older kids and teens can enjoy the larger pools, while parents appreciate the warm air and relaxed environment. It is one of the few activities where all age groups are happy at the same time.
Why it’s great in winter:
Kids stay warm, active, and entertained for hours — without needing coats, hats, or gloves. And… seriously: Swimming is one of the coolest indoor activities in Regensburg and other places.
More indoor pools in the region:
- Bulmare: Located in Burglengenfeld, Bulmare offers a slide and a baby pool.
- Westbad: The indoor pool in Regensburg features brand new slides, a multi-level diving tower and more.
- Fürthermare: Close to Nuremberg, the Fürthermare offers a huge area for babies and kids, slides and a separate area with hot tubs.
- Palm Beach: The place is known for its variety of cool slides, its lazy river and the wave pool.

🎳 4. Bowling at Super Bowl Regensburg
Best for: ages 6+ | fun, simple, perfect for mixed ages
Bowling is a winter classic, and Super Bowl Regensburg offers a family-friendly setting with colorful lanes and lightweight balls for younger children. Kids love the music and lights, and families enjoy time together without screens.
It’s also perfect for international families. The activity is familiar, easy to understand, and works well even if you don’t speak much German.
Why it’s great in winter:
It’s warm, social, and ideal for rainy afternoons or early evenings.
🎥 5. Cinemaxx Regensburg – Family Movie Time
Best for: all ages | cozy, relaxing, perfect for dark evenings
Going to the cinema is always a winter favorite, and Cinemaxx Regensburg regularly shows family movies, international releases, and animated films. Some movies are available in the original English language (OV), which is great for US Military families and international parents.
Why it’s great in winter:
Cozy, warm, and a perfect break on dark winter days.
📚 6. Regensburg Public Library (Stadtbücherei)
Best for: all ages | quiet, free, warm
Libraries are often overlooked, but the Regensburg Stadtbücherei is a wonderful indoor activity for families. The children’s section has comfortable seating, picture books, simple German stories, and space to relax.
If your kids are learning German, this is also a great place to practice in a low-pressure environment. Many families enjoy spending an hour here before heading to a café or bakery afterward.
Why it’s great in winter:
Free, quiet, warm, and perfect for slow days.
🧸 7. Indoor Playgrounds Near Regensburg – Active Fun for Cold or Rainy Days
Indoor playgrounds are one of the best winter options for families in the Regensburg region. Kids can move, climb, jump, and explore — while parents stay warm and dry. If your children need to burn off energy on cold, snowy, or rainy days, these indoor play areas are perfect.

Ghupft Wia Gsprunga (Bad Abbach)
A popular choice for families in the Regensburg area, Ghupft Wia Gsprunga offers a large indoor play space with plenty of room to jump, climb, and explore. The atmosphere is lively, the equipment is modern, and it’s a great place for kids of different ages to stay active during the winter months. There’s enough space for younger children to play safely, while school-age kids enjoy the bigger climbing and jumping areas. With younger kids, Ghupft Wia Gsprunga indoor playground is most certainly one of the coolest indoor activities in Regensburg!
Nabba Dabba Doo (Nabburg)
If you’re willing to take a short drive from Regensburg, Nabba Dabba Doo in Nabburg is another child-friendly indoor playground with lots of activities for active kids. It’s a bright, colourful place with slides, climbing towers, and plenty of open space to run around. Families often visit on weekends or school holidays, and it makes a great half-day trip when the weather outside doesn’t cooperate. It’s especially practical for families living in or around Regensburg, Schwandorf, or the northern part of the region.
All locations offer a warm, dry environment and enough variety to keep kids playing for hours — a real lifesaver during the Bavarian winter.
There is also an indoor playground in Grafenwöhr, which you might already know. As our kids didn’t enjoy it as much, I’m not recommending it.
🧗 8. Boulderwelt Regensburg
For active families, Boulderwelt Regensburg is a fantastic indoor activity during winter. Boulderwelt is an indoor bouldering hall designed for all ages — including children and beginners.
Bouldering means climbing on lower walls without ropes, with soft mats underneath for safety. Kids love it because it feels like a mix between climbing, playing, and solving puzzles. The routes (called “problems”) are color-coded and vary in difficulty, so even complete beginners can try a few easy climbs right away.
Boulderwelt has special children’s areas with playful climbing walls, soft shapes, and friendly designs. It’s a great way for kids to build strength and confidence, and it’s also a fun and social activity for adults. On winter weekends, it can be busy, but the atmosphere is motivating and family-friendly. Of course, you can rent all the necessary equipment there.
If your kids enjoy climbing at playgrounds, they will probably love Boulderwelt.
⛳ 9. Blacklight Minigolf – A Fun Indoor Activity for Older Kids and Teens
For families with older children, blacklight minigolf is an exciting alternative to traditional indoor activities. The entire course is illuminated with colourful neon art and glowing effects, creating a cool and immersive atmosphere. It’s great for kids aged 6+, teens, and even adults who want something fun and different.
Schwarzlicht-Minigolf is especially helpful on winter afternoons when the weather is too wet or too cold for outdoor adventures. The games last around one hour, making it a perfect short indoor activity before heading into the city for food or hot chocolate. Many families love it because it’s active, creative, and works well for mixed age groups. Beware that tickets are somewhat expensive.
